Family members and closest friends should be present to help turn the dying person's thoughts to Allah (SWT). Very gently encourage them to say the Shahada: "Ashadu alla ilaha il-lallahu, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadun abduhu wa Rasullullah" (I bear witness that there is no God but Allah, and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger). Remind them of their good deeds, Allah's mercy, and His forgiveness with kindness and sincerity.
Reciting the Qur'an brings comfort and spiritual benefit to the departed soul. Surah Yaseen and Surah Al-Baqarah are particularly recommended.
