Islamic Guidance

Essential knowledge for supporting our loved ones

1
Near to Death

The Last Words

Family members and closest friends should be present to help turn the dying person's thoughts to Allah (SWT). Very gently encourage them to say the Shahada: "Ashadu alla ilaha il-lallahu, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadun abduhu wa Rasullullah" (I bear witness that there is no God but Allah, and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger). Remind them of their good deeds, Allah's mercy, and His forgiveness with kindness and sincerity.

2
When Death Occurs

Important Steps

  • Close the eyes of the deceased
  • Bind the lower jaw to the head so it does not sag
  • Cover the body completely with a clean sheet
  • Make Du'a to Allah to forgive them
  • Hasten to prepare for Ghusl, Kafan, and burial
  • Pay any outstanding debts from their estate
3
Spiritual Support

Recite Qur'an

Reciting the Qur'an brings comfort and spiritual benefit to the departed soul. Surah Yaseen and Surah Al-Baqarah are particularly recommended.

"If a person accompanies a corpse, each of his steps, from when he goes there until when he goes back home, will be rewarded like 100,000 good deeds, and 100,000 of his sins will be forgiven, and he will be given 100,000 degrees by God."

— Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

"When you carry a corpse on your shoulders, imagine that it is you who is carried as though you ask your Lord to return you to this world to do some good deeds; how will you then restart your life?"

— Imam Jafar al-Sadiq (AS)

"Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets..."
