When Death is Near
Family members and close friends should be present to help the dying person turn their thoughts to Allah (SWT), encourage repentance, and remind them of His infinite mercy and forgiveness.
Gently encourage the dying person — without insistence — to recite the Shahada:
أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ "I bear witness that there is no God but Allah, and that Muhammad (SAW) is His servant and messenger."
Speak with kindness and sincerity. Remind them of their good deeds and of Allah's mercy and forgiveness.
When the person has passed, those present should:
- ✓ Close the eyes of the deceased
- ✓ Bind the lower jaw so it does not sag
- ✓ Cover the body completely with a clean sheet
- ✓ Make Du'a to Allah to forgive them
- ✓ Hasten to prepare the body for washing, shrouding, and burial
- ✓ Arrange to settle any outstanding debts from the estate

It is highly recommended to recite Surah Yaseen in the presence of the dying or recently deceased. The Prophet (SAW) said: "Recite Yaseen over your dying ones."
Reciting Surah Baqarah near the deceased provides spiritual protection. It is especially recommended for the home where a person has passed away.
Dua-e-Adeela is recited at the time of death to strengthen and affirm the correct beliefs. It is a declaration of faith and is highly encouraged for the dying person to recite or have recited for them.
